LATIN GALA DINNER - SSWA
Last Saturday, the luxurious Regent Hotel, was host to the first Oscars Academy Award Ceremony that has taken place in the history of Singapore.
More than 300 music and movie stars arrived after 8 pm in their chauffeur driven limousines, and walked into the red carpet. Some of the celebrities tried to get away from the flashes to no avail.
Along with the fans and the groupies, the paparazzi pushed their way through the lobby trying to capture a glimpse in the fancy lives of these interesting people. Some of the actors were caught walking into the hotel with gorgeous internationally renowned models. These beauties were waring gowns by European designers and jewelry from Cartier, Tiffany, Takashimaya and even from Silom road, where these ladies are often seen shopping after their regular visits to the Spas at the bank of the Chao Phraya River.
El pasado 6 de Noviembre se llevó a cabo en el lujoso Hotel Regent de Singapur la primera entrega de los Oscar en la historia de nuestra isla. A partir de las 8 pm, mas de 300 famosos personajes de la farándula local e internacional empezaron a llegar al hotel en sus lujosas limusinas, entraron por la alfombra roja del hotel y, a pesar de que trataron de pasar desapercibidos, los paparazzi lograron llegar hasta el lobby, donde, junto con los fanáticos del cine, causaron gran alboroto y tomaron cientos de fotos de las celebridades mas reconocidas, algunos de los cuales fueron sorprendidos entrando al hotel en compañia de hermosisimas modelos en su mayoría latino americanas o españolas.
Todas lucia trajes largos de conocidos diseñadores y adornaban sus cuerpos con joyas de Cartier, Tiffany, Takashimaya y hasta de los rincones de Bangkok.
That was just the start of an unforgettable evening. Fortunately the Churkas were able to detained most of the paparazzi and the gossip journalist at the door. I, through my Colombian connections with the management, was able to get a ticket from Señor Ricardo Acevedo and sneak into the Ballroom to have a peak at this most extravagant Singawood party of the rich and famous. They were all welcomed by Margaritas, Pisco Sours and even beers brought from Guadalajara. Highly reliable sources assured me that these beverages were donated by the Latin American Ambassadors with the intention to please the beautiful Spanish and Latin ladies that filled the room in that memorable night. And pleased they must have been, because every one there was flirting, laughing, dancing, and full joy and charm. And for the amount of Corona drank that night, I suggest you all talk to Señor Andrès Carral, Ambassador of Mexico, about buying stock on Modesto Brewery.
Asi se abrió la noche inolvidable del pasado sábado. Afortunadamente los Ghurkas del hotel pudieran detener a muchos de los paparazzi y periodistas curiosos. Yo, con una invitación obtenida por medios que no revelare, logre escabullirme hasta el salón para observar la fiesta grande de los ricos y famosos de Singawood.
Todos fueron recibidos con aperitivos latino americanos como margaritas, pisco sours y hasta cervezas Corona traídas desde Rio Grande. Cuentan las malas lenguas que estas bebidas fueron cortesía de los embajadores hispanos, con la intención de complacer a las hermosas mujeres latinas y españolas que inundaban el salón en tan memorable noche. Y complacidas debieron estar, porque a partir de entonces reinaron las sonrisas, el coqueteo y el ambiente de alegría tan característico de esa raza.
After the cocktails, the stars went into a beautifully decorated Ballroom. Exotic flowers, ice and gold sculptures, and Hollywood images of themselves adorned the stage. There was a feeling of luxury and opulence very appropriate for such distinguished and whimsical guests. Steven Shalowits, the MC, welcomed the crowd, not intimidated at all, since Steven himself is a local celebrity, a host for the only Latin music show in Singapore and a loved character among the Spanish residents here. He and Alejandra Grobet made a great team and presented the guest of honour, Vernetta Lopez, who was recognized by many local celebrities present, from her TV and movie appearances. Vernetta, (no relation to our Jennifer) proceeded to practice her Spanish and make her hand prints immortal in Singapore. Wow... Like... Totally Hollywood, lah, what can I say ?
Después de los aperitivos, los famosos pasaron a un salón decorado con sus propias fotos, ilustrando las diferentes películas que han hecho y los premios que han ganado en Hollywood.
Flores exóticas, estatuillas de Oscar en oro y en hielo adornaban la tarima, dando una imagen de opulencia y lujo apropiada para tan distinguidos invitados. Allí los recibió Steven Shalowitz, que es a su vez un fanático de la cultura latina, coleccionista de música tropical y anfitrión durante muchos años del único show radiofónico de Singapur dedicado a la música hispana. Muy querido por la comunidad latina de Singapur, Steven sirvió de maestro de ceremonias y fue ayudado, en español, por nuestra propia y encantadora locutora mexicana, Alejandra Grobet. en medio de todo esto, la actriz local, invitada de honor, Vernetta Lopez, no desaprovecho momento para tomar el micrófono, dar su opinión del asunto e imprimir sus huellas en cemento haciendo así su palma inmortal en Singapur. Nuestras invitadas latiamericanas poco habían oído hablar de Vernetta Lopez, siendo mas conocida su tocaya Jeniffer en nuestro medio, pero causo diversión toda la escena Hollywoodiense.
The guests also had the honor of being entertained by the Chinese Ladies Association, who presented a Chacha and a Salsa dance. Very brave of these ladies: dancing Salsa for the Latinos... Let see if in the next Chinese Ladies Party some of the Latin girls go and do a Beijing Opera Show ? The ladies actually did a great job dancing and received a round of applause. With this number and the Flamenco show, also performed by local talent, we were first hand witnesses of the rapid divulgation of Latino and Spanish Culture in Asia. Watch out dragons, this is going to get CALIENTE !
Como causo diversión también el show de baile latino realizado por las damas chinas. Mucha valentía tuvieron estas damas al presentarse bailando chachacha y salda ante una audiencia hispana, pero la verdad sea dicha, no lo hicieron mal. A ver cuantas latinas se animan a cantar opera pekinesa a un grupo de chinos.... Vale decir que aplaudidas fueron y una vez mas se hizo presente la hospitalidad latina.
Bueno ver que hemos tenido influencia positiva por estas tierras y que nuestra música y bailes se han difundido por el continente asiático.
Chef Oldham´s menu, served by dozens of waiters in a truly spectacular show, was especially creative in its presentation and in the names of the dishes. The Pastry Chef also made his mark with the Marylyn Monroe chocolates and the hazelnut praline filled slippers. Ideal treats catering to the capriccios of these pampered celebrities. After 1 am, some of the guest began eating the chocolate slippers (Ginger Roger´s Dancing Shoes) and later were caught by the camera indulging in many other pleasures with the dessert tray and their table mates.
El menú preparado por el Chel Oldham y servido por decenas de meseros en un show verdaderamente espectacular, fue especialmente ingeniosos en su presentación y en el nombre de los platos. Igualmente se lucio el chef de respostería con los chocolates de Marylin Monroe y las zapatillas rellenas de crema de avellanas. Ideales para los personajes allí presentes que gozan de gustos caprichosos y exóticos. Algunos se vieron deleitando las zapatillas de Ginger Rogers y de otros placeres en publico a partir de la 1 de la madrugada.
Jazz singer Amanda Jantzen interpreted Hollywood songs bringing tears of nostalgia to some, as they watched clips from the films that made them laugh or cry 10, 20, or 30 years ago. Tough crowd to please,though, some loved the additional entertaining: some felt that they would have preferred to chat with their friends while enjoying the dinner. Conversation was indeed an impossible task through most of the evening, since the mic was always on with something. One thing is for sure, Jantzen had a good voice and she is sure to see some new fans at her regular hang out in The Bar of the Regent, where they also serve good Caipirinhas.
La cena fue amenizada por la cantante de jazz Amanda Jantzen, quien interpreto temas de Hollywood y lleno de nostalgia a los presentes mientras veían en la pantalla fragmentos de las películas que los hicieron reír y llorar hace 10, 20 o 30 años. Buena voz, aunque el volumen restó un poco la posibilidad de conversar con los amigos en la mesa a la hora de cenar e hizo que la noche tuviera mucha influencia norteamericana. Pero con estos famosos nunca se sabe como complacerlos, son muy exigentes, unos querían mucho ingles, otros muchos español, así que hubo un poco de todo. Para todos los gustos.
Aside from the gorgeous actresses, models and directors, the evening had many other stars: The Latin American Ambassadors, for providing the drinks that made some people more able to move their hips on the dance floor. Bravo !!!
Además de las hermosas actrices y modelos presentes, las estrellas de la noche fueron muchas: los embajadores latinos, por haber donado las bebidas que imprimieron alegría y facilitaron el baile;

the two bands, Alma Latina, with my second favorite Saxophonist in the world, Halid Cesar (my first favourite was sitting next to me and i Khalid´s alum) and Cartagena Power flown in that day from overseas for the party.
María Alejandra Mattison, por su hermosa interpretación de flamenco, que voz tan bella y que pasión ! las orquestas Alma Latina y Cartagena Power que se ganaron la admiración de todos los presentes. Desde que salio Cartagena Power al escenario se prendió la fiesta y la noche se volvió latina...
As soon as the timbales, the sax and the brass played the rhythms of Salsa, the floor was packed with dancers and enthusiasts. The night took a completely Latin and Caribbean flavour... this was the twenty-sixth annual Gala Ball of the Spanish Speaking Women´s Association.
La vigésimo sexta fiesta anual de Asociación de Damas de Habla Hispana.
And the night went on with Merengue, Bachatas and even Cumbias.
This annual party has the reputation to be one of the best parties in town. Dania Acevedo, the president, and her committee proved it again. It was a magic night full of fancy details, prizes, surprises and with a distinctive Latin touch.
Al son de Cali Pachanguero se lleno la pista de bailarines y entusiastas. Fue maravilloso ver a europeus, asiáticos, americanos y latinos bailando al son de la Salsa, el Merengue y la Bachatas. No hicieron falta ni las velas para que salieran cumbiamberas de todas las mesas. Con música así, los colombianos no nos vamos de la fiesta "hasta que salga el sol".
On this academy awards, Dania, Chela, Alejandra, Elegie, Paty Davis and Chef Oldham took the Oscar for 2004. Well deserved for an extraordinary job and effort. Bravo !!!
Este baile anual, tiene la reputación de ser la mejor fiesta de Gala en Singapur. Dania Acevedo, la presidente, y su comité nos lo demostraron una vez mas. Fue una fiesta inigualable en creatividad, ambiente, premios, presentación y alma latina. Esa noche de los Oscar, Dania, Chela, Alejandra, Elegie, Paty Davis se llevaron el primer premio de 2004 y muy bien merecido por una organizacion y un trabajo extraordinario. Bravo !!!
